Since 2008, Rolex's Submariner design had featured the iconic ceramic bezel and substantial 'Maxi' case. In 2020, however, Rolex brought out a brand new Submariner design with subtle yet significant changes. For the first time since the 1950s, the case size was altered, increasing from 40mm to 41mm. However, this came with slimmed down lugs and crown guards, making the proportions feel a little more like the four and five-digit models.

The movement was also upgraded, with the calibre 3235 giving you a 70-hour power reserve, compared to the calibre 3135's 48 hours. The movement also contains a plethora of other upgrades increasing longevity and serviceability. All in all, it's a welcome upgrade that brings the watch in line with current technological advancements while also providing enthusiasts with an alternative to the somewhat chunky 'Maxi' case designs.

Rolex's Submariner is to many the definitive wristwatch. From its origins as a diver's companion and James Bond's wristwatch, the Submariner has ingrained itself into popular culture like no watch before or since. Worn and loved by bankers, rappers and watch enthusiasts alike, the Submariner possibly the most culturally significant piece of horology ever.

This doesn't mean it's all talk and no action though - the Submariner is iconic for a reason. Its water resistant Oyster case, highly legible Mercedes hands and timing bezel may have originated as practical functions, but they've come together to create a beautifully proportioned watch that appeals as much to the designer's eye as it does to the procurement officer's spec sheet.
