The Rolex Oysterquartz is a fascinating chapter in the watchmaker's history. The company had been at the forefront of innovation in mechanical watchmaking, from the automatic winding rotor to the waterproof Oyster case. In the 1960s and 70s, Rolex set its sights on watchmaking's newest innovation, the quartz movement. Rather than dropping the movement into an existing design, Rolex decided to present them on entirely new cases featuring integrated bracelets and a more angular design.
Thus, the Oysterquartz was born. Over the next two decades, Rolex produced a plethora of variations on the model. Even though they were quartz movements, Rolex spared no expense in their production. Just looking at the movement, you'll see that rather than a small battery component with a massive spacer, the Oysterquartz movements were designed for the watches specifically. The battery is nestled within a series of metal plates, traditionally decorated with Cotes de Geneve and rubies set in gold chatons. This makes the Oysterquartz not only a novel an unusual watch, but also an extremely well-built one, featuring the very best Rolex had to offer at the time.
ROLEX
Known by many simply as "the Crown", Rolex has certainly done much to deserve its reputation. From its founding just over a century ago by a German immigrant in the UK, Rolex has grown to become an international behemoth, recognisable (and indeed visible) across the globe.
Compared to other modern watchmakers, Rolex is in the near-unique position where its vintage watches have developed an almost entirely distinct collector base. It's no surprise, however, given the diversity and iconic status of so many Rolex models. The vintage Rolex community has arguably brought vintage watch collecting into the mainstream by shedding light on the beauty of old, worn watches which had so long been ignored by most.
