While the original Explorer traces its heritage back to 1953, the Explorer II was initially released in 1971. Designed for cave explorers, it features a 24-hour hand and bezel meant for users to keep track of time in dark environments with no access to sunlight.

Outside of its intended use, the Explorer II has become a more rugged watch than the more luxurious and recognisable GMT-Masters, making it a perfect everyday wearer for the watch lover with more discreet tastes.

The more modern six-digit references are surprisingly similar in design, but also 'spirit'. While the polished and luxurious ceramic Submariners were a clear departure from their predecessors, not much has changed with the Explorer II apart from the case size and colour of the GMT hand. This keeps it true to its practical origins, while also giving enthusiasts and collectors a more discreet choice.
