The ref. 3705 was one of IWC's very first forays into ceramic watches, at a time when very few companies considered using it due to the fragile connotations of the word. When it was released, it was generally unpopular for that very reason, selling far fewer than its steel counterpart.

Today, it's become emblematic of IWC's daring approach to using unconventional materials in watchmaking. In addition to being a cutting edge watch, it also has the charm of a neo-vintage piece, including the aged lume on the hands and dial.

IWC, previously known as the International Watch Company, is the unlikely result of an American businessman's industrial practices applied to traditional Swiss watchmaking. His attempt to industrialise Swiss watchmaking was heavily opposed in French Switzerland, but he found in Schaffhausen a town that welcomed his ideas.

Fast forward to today, IWC stays close to its industrial-age heritage. While the new manufacture looks nothing like the factories of the 19th Century, it still approaches watchmaking with the same efficiency that was unheard of when the company was first conceived.
