The first thing you notice about the H. Moser & Cie Henry Double Hairspring might be its vibrant sunburst dial or its unusual case shape, but the real reason for its success lies on the reverse - the Calibre HMC 234 movement.
When it was initially launched, this movement was lauded for its mechanical innovations. Firstly, it featured Moser's trademark modular escapement, which allows for much faster servicing as well as interchangeability of a watch's most complex components.
The second innovation is what gives the watch its name - the Double Hairspring. Essentially, the second hairspring balances out the centre of gravity which would otherwise be very slightly skewed to one side. While seemingly minor, improvements like these display the ability of modern watchmakers to continually improve upon what their predecessors created.
This Moser is in excellent with only light wear marks consistent with a lightly-handled solid gold case, and comes with the original inner and outer boxes, as well as the booklets, hang tag and papers. The outer box is lightly scuffed.
H. MOSER & CIE
H. Moser & Cie was originally founded in the early 19th Century in St. Petersburg, then part of the Russian Empire. It supplied the much of the European monarchies and aristocracy throughout its original iteration, and was re-founded in 2005 by one of Heinrich Moser's grandchildren.
Since its relaunch, the brand has been known both for its high-end watchmaking innovations as well as its eye-catching marketing approach. From making an Apple watch lookalike (its latest version complete with the 'loading' icon) to crafting a watch out of Swiss cheese, Moser is no stranger to controversy. At the same time, its horological innovations are undoubtedly significant, including the world's first modular escapement, which eliminates one of the most time-consuming aspects of servicing a watch.
