Cartier celebrated the 75th Anniversary of its iconic Santos by releasing this Santos Carre with an eye-catching red dial. While it's a departure from the design of the now-conservative Roman numerals and white dials of the original watch, it's very much in line with Cartier's reputation for daring and unconventional designs.
The Cartier Santos is, in many ways, the first modern wristwatch. Created for the Brazilian aviator Alberto Santos-Dumont after he complained about the difficulties of handling a pocket watch in flight, the Cartier Santos quickly became an icon of the times. The overall design of a rectangular watch with rounded edges and a dial featuring thin, elongated Roman numerals has survived through to modern times, proving its ubiquity and timelessness.
The Santos was refreshed in the 1980s as a thoroughly modern Cartier. Instead of the original slim dress watch, it was reimagined as an everyday wearer, offered in steel and on a bracelet. The modern Santos follows this design philosophy, using larger cases, sportier designs, and an automatic movement.
CARTIER
Described by King Edward VII as 'the jeweller of kings and the king of jewellers', Cartier is synonymous with perhaps more iconic designs than any other manufacturer. Sitting at the intersection between fine watchmaking and art, Cartier combines decades of heritage with an ability to create original and attractive watch designs.
From its birth in the 19th Century up to today, Cartier has earned a well-deserved reputation for being a manufacture that has successfully transformed the humble wristwatch from a soldier's tool into a true object of desire.
