This Rolex COMEX 5514 was obtained from the original owner in 2020 and this is the first time it has been offered for sale.

Included with the watch we have a several page letter from the original owner, six photos, COMEX cloth badge, a professional copy of his dive logs with 50+ pages covering many dives from 1974 until 1981 in the North Sea, South Africa, Spain and Mexico, a large assortment of other paperwork to include a US Navy
diving manual, American Divers Oilfield papers, a batch of A4 diving reports and other hand written documents.

The watch is in excellent condition for its age and provenance, with an even layer of scratches across the case and bracelet. The dial is clean and has some light patination. The bracelet has some noticeable stretch. The bezel has a few scratches throughout. There is a scratch on the crystal near 3 o'clock.

As this is a rare and highly collectible watch, there is no guarantee for water resistance on it.

Rolex's Submariner is perhaps the single most recognisable watch today. Amongst hardcore Rolex enthusiasts, however, a handful of rare references form the 'hall of fame'. One of these references is the 'COMEX' Submariner, which was created for the Compagnie maritime d’expertises (COMEX for short). COMEX specialises in deep sea diving and engineering, and as such needed a highly water resistant watch to give to its divers.

This partnership gave birth to a number of references. The first was a 5513 with a helium escape valve. This was followed by the 5514, created and sold exclusively to COMEX. Made in at least three batches, they have slightly different features depending on their age. This particular watch is one of the earliest variations, and as such does not have the COMEX logo printed on the dial and features 'ROLEX COMEX' engraved in a straight line across the caseback. Later models featured a 'ROLEX COMEX' engraving around the edges of the caseback.

Known by many simply as "the Crown", Rolex has certainly done much to deserve its reputation. From its founding just over a century ago by a German immigrant in the UK, Rolex has grown to become an international behemoth, recognisable (and indeed visible) across the globe.

Compared to other modern watchmakers, Rolex is in the near-unique position where its vintage watches have developed an almost entirely distinct collector base. It's no surprise, however, given the diversity and iconic status of so many Rolex models. The vintage Rolex community has arguably brought vintage watch collecting into the mainstream by shedding light on the beauty of old, worn watches which had so long been ignored by most.
