Originally released in 1971, the ref. 1655 was the very first Explorer II produced by Rolex. Originally designed for cave explorers, it features a 24-hour hand to help them keep track of time while in the dark.

Unlike subsequent Explorer II models, the 1655 has a distinctive dial and hand layout. Instead of the brand's iconic 'Mercedes' hands, the 1655 uses less flashy but equally practical pencil hands. The dial is more visually complex, with alternating hour minute markers making for a funky aesthetic.

The watch got its nickname from the legendary actor and racecar driver, who was often spotted wearing one. It's a very unique Rolex given how different it was from its successors, making it a worthy part of any collection.

ROLEX

Known by many simply as "the Crown", Rolex has certainly done much to deserve its reputation. From its founding just over a century ago by a German immigrant in the UK, Rolex has grown to become an international behemoth, recognisable (and indeed visible) across the globe.

Compared to other modern watchmakers, Rolex is in the near-unique position where its vintage watches have developed an almost entirely distinct collector base. It's no surprise, however, given the diversity and iconic status of so many Rolex models. The vintage Rolex community has arguably brought vintage watch collecting into the mainstream by shedding light on the beauty of old, worn watches which had so long been ignored by most.
