First released in 1954, the GMT-Master was a joint effort by the watchmakers at Rolex and pilots at Pan American Airways. This resulted in the ref. 6542, which utilised the base movement and case from the Turn-o-Graph ref. 6202 (which developed into the Submariner) and modified it to include the now-famous 24-hour hand and two-colour bezel.
In 1982, the first GMT-Master II was released. This was a greatly improved version, which allowed the 12-hour hand to be independently set in one-hour increments forwards and backwards. As a result, this allowed for an extra timezone to be tracked by the user.
This watch is in excellent condition, with some light scratches to the bracelet and case. The bracelet has some very mild stretch.
Comes with newer style Rolex inner and outer box set, hang tags, document holder, translation booklet and a colour photo copy of the original guarantee paper which is not present.
Known by many simply as 'the Crown', Rolex has certainly done much to deserve its reputation. From its founding just over a century ago by a German immigrant in the UK, Rolex has grown to become an international behemoth, recognisable (and indeed visible) across the globe.
Few other watchmakers can boast the same combination of consistency, quality and desirability as Rolex. Everything from the build quality of the cases and bracelets to the chronometer-rated movements are designed to ensure that even the most discerning of owners are satisfied.
